Art Basel and Miami Art week; one artists experience

Spot Light 40 x 40"

Showing my work at Miami Art Week in December was incredibly exhilarating. To be a part of this mass cultural event with artists and collectors from around the world was a thrill I hope I will get to repeat.   There was a wishing tree at the Pulse Pavillion carrying the wish "to see my art at Art Basel one day" capturing the sentiments of all the artist walking through including my own. At first, the sheer number over twenty venues displaying art was overwhelming, but after visiting three exhibits each day followed by films in the park or installations on the beach after dark, the pace quickly became the norm. Once I got into the rhythm of attending the greater Art Basel event, I knew at its end I would miss getting up in the morning to view more art.
The Cincinnati gallery ADC that took my work to the Spectrum show did a great job displaying and representing my artwork. Even creating a brochure of all the exhibiting artist's work which I found an inspiration I may want to repeat for future exhibits.
Attending Art Basel was about half ridiculousness, and I put a note to self to skip it next time and see more of the other fairs where I found art that was more engaging to my taste. Although I did enjoy getting to see three galleries with 20th-century masters where I was able to experience several Rene Magritte's that I would not have been available to see outside of Art Basel.
Overall it was heartening to see this bustling market of collectors in search of new treasures that will become the private and museum collections of the future. Willingly embracing the responsibility of owning artwork that will one day need housed and distributed beyond the original owner's lifetime. Like most artists, I am happiest in the quiet solitude of my studio working, but I am pleased to know there are still collectors interested in preserving the culture and encouraging creative thought. As I feel strongly that engaging in creativity grounds us in our humanity. When we take time to connect to the source of creative inspiration our world becomes better for it.
